Carrabelle Park on its own is a modest neighborhood stop — worn, faded equipment though it is still safe. No shade cover over playground equipment is a real problem in San Jose's heat since equipment becomes too hot to touch midday. There is however, plenty of shaded seating to watch the playground. No bathrooms, and nothing particularly standout. Best suited for ages 2-8 with no dedicated big kid equipment.
What changes the equation is the location. Greystone Elementary next door has two new playground structures open to the public during off-school hours, and suddenly you have three playgrounds in one visit, making it a far more worthwhile outing than first impressions suggest.
Lots of open grassy space for running around is a bonus. Just visit in the morning before the heat sets in.
